PEMPS learners heed SPCA call for help
The learners went above and beyond, donating a significant amount of pet food, which was then handed over to the SPCA.
POLOKWANE – Learners from Pietersburg English Medium Primary School (PEMPS) showcased the spirit of Ubuntu by collecting pet food for the SPCA recently. This initiative came in response to local biker clubs, who called for donations of cat and dog food as the SPCA was running low on supplies.
The learners went above and beyond, donating a significant amount of pet food, which was then handed over to the SPCA.
Teacher Carol Shilubane explained that former PEMPS learners, Miguel Vilar from Born to Ride Free and Alwyn van Heerden, approached the school to collaborate in gathering the pet food.
“Our learners have a sharing and caring heart, so they eagerly donated all the food, which will now go to the SPCA. They collected food for three weeks, and their enthusiasm was boosted by a friendly competition between classes to see which could donate the most,” she shared.
Shilubane, a junior phase teacher, observed that the learners are becoming more mindful and understand the importance of sharing.
“I could see it in the questions they asked, like how many pets one can of food would feed and for how long. This shows they grasp the impact of their actions,” she added.
Principal Desire Conradie expressed pride in the learners’ efforts, noting that it demonstrates their understanding of the importance of giving to those in need. “Every term, our school takes on various initiatives. We might also be organising a blanket drive for the winter to donate to local shelters.”
The pet food donation drive is a testament to PEMPS learners’ commitment to making a positive difference in their community.
