POLOKWANE – In a historic move, the ANC’s National Executive Committee has named Dr Phophi Ramathuba as the premier candidate for the seventh administration in provinces where the party holds a majority.

This groundbreaking decision marks the first time a woman has been chosen for this prestigious position in the democratic history of the province.

Party secretary-general Fikile Mbalula announced the decision in a written statement, revealing that candidates underwent interviews between Monday and Wednesday.

The provincial legislature will hold its first session today, following a rehearsal yesterday in Lebowakgomo. During this session, Ramathuba and other members will be officially sworn in to commence their duties.

Ramathuba, a medical doctor and former health MEC, garnered significant support from party branches, surpassing rivals Basikopo Makamu and Naledi Kekana.

Close sources within the provincial executive indicated that the national executive was also impressed by her performance and credentials.

Known for her proactive leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and her involvement in assisting the families of the 45 Botswana nationals who died in a tragic car crash near Mokopane, Ramathuba has gained widespread admiration, as reflected in her social media interactions.

The ANC Women’s League hailed this nomination as a ‘historic milestone’, celebrating the potential elevation of a female leader to the premier position.
