Thohoyandou women receive help after VBS Bank collapse
Food hampers bring relief to destitute women, including VBS Bank collapse victims, in a heartwarming community initiative.
LIMPOPO – The Chief Matsila Foundation, in collaboration with the Rev Tshenuwani Farisani Foundation, handed over food hampers to women who were victims of the VBS Bank collapse, along with 100 other destitute women from the Matsila community on Saturday.
The event aimed to provide relief to these women, many of whom are representatives of stokvels and burial societies from the Thohoyandou area.
The food hampers, donated by the Gift of the Givers Foundation, were intended to alleviate the burdens of unemployment and poverty that are prevalent in rural communities, especially among those affected by the VBS Bank’s collapse.
Many of these women have been left facing the harsh reality of daily hunger due to their lost savings when the bank collapsed.
During the ceremony, Chief Matsila emphasised the importance of recognising the struggles of destitute women, particularly during Women’s Month.
“I feel burdened as a leader whenever I walk the streets and see poverty on the faces of my people,” he stated.
Matsila also noted that this was not the first time food parcels donated by the Gift of the Givers Foundation had been distributed in the community.
He expressed his commitment to continuing collaboration with the Rev Tshenuwani Farisani Foundation to empower women and communities in the Vhembe District whenever the need arises.
The day was marked by vibrant cultural celebrations, with women of all ages dressed in colourful traditional attire, dancing to Tshivenda and Xitsonga music.
The atmosphere was filled with joy, with ululations heard at every corner.
Representing the Tshenuwani Farisani Foundation, CEO Kenny Mathivha announced that the foundation’s patron, Rev Tshenuwani Farisani will celebrate his 77th birthday on August 31 by hosting 77 women who have all been victims of the VBS Mutual Bank collapse.
