Suspected firearm training facility raided in Modimolle

The Limpopo Hawks says military-related training cannot be ruled out after they confiscated firearms and ammunition on a farm in Modimolle.

POLOKWANE – The provincial head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General (Adv) Gopz Govender says it is the duty of the police to work towards preventing anything that threatens the safety and security of South Africa.

Govender’s remarks follow the discovery of an alleged firearm training facility in Modimolle on August 8 by members of the Polokwane-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit in collaboration with Public Order Police, the Local Criminal Record Centre, the Tactical Response Team and Modimolle Vispol.

The Hawks’ spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa said the Hawks received a tip-off about a suspicious training camp at a farm in Modimolle.

“A sting operation in collaboration with the units mentioned was conducted. Several firearms and ammunition was confiscated.”

Mmuroa added that the team seized licensed rifles, pistols and ammunition believed to be used during the training.

“The purpose of the training is not yet clear but military-related training cannot be ruled out,” his statement read.

Mmuroa said how the firearms and ammunition landed on the farm is still under investigation.

“No one was arrested,” he concluded.
