Polokwane dance duo need support to get to Netherlands

SA dance champs Molemo Moholane and Akani Hlungwani seek support for 2024 World Dance Championships, aiming to put SA on global stage.

POLOKWANE – Molemo Moholane (22) and Akani Hlungwani (16), ambassadors for the South African Dance Foundation and ballroom dance partners, are set to compete at the 2024 World Dance Council Amateur League (WDC AL) World Championships from November 4-10 in The Netherlands.

Both dancers are eligible to represent South Africa in this prestigious event, which showcases the elite talents of top couples from WDC member countries, all vying for the title of WDC AL champions.

Moholane and Hlungwani are the reigning South African Youth Latin American Champions, a title they earned at the highly regarded South African Open Dance Championships.

Their exceptional skills and consistent excellence mark a significant milestone in their dance journey. Their recent triumph at the South African Open Dance Championship proved their dedication and talent.

In addition to being a champion partner, Moholane also holds the title of South African Adult Solo Latin American Champion and is the reigning amateur Latin solo world champion.

He is a University of Limpopo alumnus who completed his four-year optometry course in record time, graduating in March.

The duo previously represented South Africa at the 2023 WDC AL world championships and Dutch open world championships in Assen, Netherlands, where Moholane secured a gold medal in the Dutch open world adult (u/30) Latin solo championships. As official representatives for South Africa, they aim to elevate their performance at the upcoming 2024 world championships.

Moholane stressed the importance of preparation.

“We will need to travel to the world championships and participate in key development congresses, both locally and globally, as part of our readiness. It is critical that we be afforded the opportunity to dance and learn from the best.”

Hlungwani added, “We hope that not only Limpopo but South Africa as a whole will extend their generosity to aid our development in dance. Your support will mean a lot to us. South Africa, together we can.”
