Double life for Limpopo Facebook rapist
Mukovhe Makhavhu, a self-proclaimed prophet, has been sentenced to two life terms for rape, sexual assault, and robbery.
LIMPOPO – Mukovhe Makhavhu, also known as ‘Ela Mutavhatsindi’ was sentenced to two life terms by Judge Thogomelani Tshidada in the Limpopo High Court sitting at Waterval on October 22. Makhavhu was found guilty of four counts, including rape, sexual assault, and robbery.
The convictions stem from a series of incidents in 2021, which took place in the secluded areas of Phiphidi and the Mutshundudi River.
Makhavhu, who referred to himself as a prophet, used his Facebook account to lure women under the guise of offering spiritual services, only to rape and assault them.
Makhavhu had amassed a large following on social media, with over 100 000 followers on his page. He made outrageous claims about his abilities, promising free prayer sessions to help with job opportunities, relationship problems, and healing rituals, which he used as bait to attract his victims.

During sentencing, Judge Tshidada stressed the severity of Makhavhu’s actions and noted that the crimes were premeditated. He also noted the absence of remorse from Makhavhu, saying this points to the calculated nature of his offences.
The Real Men Foundation, an organisation advocating for the rights of women and children, welcomed the sentence. Chairperson Itani Nenguda praised the ruling as a strong message to offenders.
“As an organisation, we are elated with this sentence. When judges pass sentences proportional to the crime, it sends a clear message that crime does not pay,” Nenguda said, commending the justice system and those involved in the investigation.
One of the victims, whose identity is withheld due to the nature of the crime, expressed relief at the outcome. “Makhavhu will rot in jail. I’m happy that justice has been served without bias,” she said. “I hope this sentence will set an example for other rapists.”
