Limpopo launches Safer Festive Season Operations

Limpopo Premier launches Safer Festive Season Operations, uniting government and law enforcement to ensure public safety.

LIMPOPO – The Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, along with the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, and the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, led the launch of the Safer Festive Season Operations on Sunday at the Lebowakgomo Sports Grounds.

The event brought together traditional authorities, government institutions, municipalities, law enforcement agencies, and community members, all united in a commitment to ensuring public safety during the festive season.

Hadebe addressed the issue of corruption within the police.

“To those criminals hiding behind our badge, your days are numbered. The anti-corruption unit and the Hawks will ensure that these rogue officers are permanently removed from our ranks.”

She spoke of recent arrests of corrupt officers at the Lebowakgomo police station, assuring attendees of the police’s readiness to tackle any threats during the festive period.

Hadebe also highlighted that combating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) remains a top priority, reaffirming the need for women and children to feel safe in the province.

“We also recognise the rise in extortion, but with the support of sister departments, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders, we are well-prepared to eliminate these criminal activities.”

During the event, 65 new police vehicles were handed over to enhance law enforcement’s capacity to serve local communities.

The premier praised the increasing presence of women in leadership roles and urged officers to approach their duties with dedication.

“Women have a natural ability to understand the value of life, which drives them to act decisively. To our men and women in blue – criminals are not your friends. Deal with them firmly and protect your life and those around you,” she urged.

The premier stressed the link between public safety and economic growth, warning that crime discourages potential investors. “Investors do not come to crime-ridden areas. If we allow crime to flourish, we risk driving away opportunities and worsening unemployment,” she cautioned.

Ramathuba called on communities to play a vital role in identifying and exposing criminals within their midst. “Respect your uniform. It carries a responsibility greater than you can imagine. Know your code of conduct by heart – it should guide you daily,” she concluded, promising more resources for the police. “What you see today is just the beginning. Expect more. The new sheriff is in town.”

The launch included a guard of honour by police officers and demonstrations showcasing the readiness of law enforcement for the festive season, highlighting a combined effort to ensure that Limpopo remains safe for residents and visitors throughout the holiday period.
