Hosi George Sonto Mahonisi-IV's legacy was celebrated with a statue unveiling, honouring his 44 years of leadership, community development, and education.

LIMPOPO – The life and legacy of Hosi George Sonto Mahonisi-IV were celebrated on Saturday during a remembrance ceremony and the unveiling of his statue at the Mahonisi tribal office outside Malamulele.

Known as a people’s person, politician, peacemaker, pioneer, and a champion of community development and education, Mahonisi-IV was honoured for his 44 years of impactful leadership.

Mahonisi chief Rhangani Resenga explained that the event aimed to reflect on Mahonisi’s life, leadership values, and vision. “We gathered to celebrate his life, evaluate our progress in continuing his legacy, and foster social cohesion while restoring the dignity of Mahonisi Traditional Leadership,” Resenga said.

The ceremony attracted widespread participation, including dignitaries, representatives from the Mozambican government, strategic partners such as the University of Venda, and surrounding communities. “The event exceeded expectations, and the support we received demonstrated a shared commitment to uplifting the community,” Resenga added.

Collins Chabane Mayor Gezane Shadrack Maluleke also delivered a message of support, commending the late Mahonisi for his service to the people.

“As we honour the life of Hosi Mahonisi-IV, we express gratitude to his family for sharing his leadership with our residents. As the local government, we will continue collaborating with the Mahonisi royal family to ensure quality service delivery for the Mahonisi community and surrounding villages,” Maluleke stated.

He also emphasised the importance of working with traditional leaders to address challenges in rural and economically underdeveloped areas. “Strong partnerships with traditional leaders are essential to combat poverty and underdevelopment. I call on all traditional leaders to continue collaborating with the government to improve the lives of our people,” he concluded.
