High-tech roadblock bus launched in Mokopane

Mogalakwena Mayor Ngoako Taueatsoala said the ANPR bus scans vehicle plates to identify offences, such as outstanding fines, summonses, and warrants.

POLOKWANE – Mogalakwena Municipality, in partnership with key stakeholders, launched a new roadblock bus last Friday to enhance road safety and prevent crime during the festive season.

The bus is equipped with cutting-edge tools, including an Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, a Motor Vehicle Testing Station truck (MTVS), speed laser cameras, and both manual and digital pro-laser cameras.

During the launch, Mayor Ngoako Taueatsoala announced that the municipality has received 20 digital devices to be installed at various locations in town.

Mayor Ngoako Taueatsoala urges motorists to drive safely this festive season.

He highlighted that Mogalakwena is the first municipality in the province and district to adopt this technology.

The mayor explained that the municipality is moving from manual book-based traffic fines to a digital system, ensuring faster and more efficient law enforcement. He also promised the construction of a traffic testing station in Mapela before the end of the council’s term.

Taueatsoala explained that the ANPR bus scans vehicle plates to identify offences, such as outstanding fines, summonses, and warrants.

Payments can be processed on-site through Yoco terminals or handheld devices, with officials able to print summonses and notices directly from the bus. The bus also allows representatives to address fine reductions on-site. CCTV surveillance ensures that all activities around the bus are monitored, contributing to both safety and accountability.

The mayor said the new roadblock bus, together with speed cameras and increased visibility of law enforcement officers, will encourage better driving behaviour.

He appealled to motorists to respect speed limits and traffic signs, warning against reckless driving that treats public roads as highways. Taueatsoala stressed the importance of safer roads, particularly during the holiday season, to avoid the tragic consequences of accidents.

Concluding his remarks, the mayor highlighted the urgency of improving road safety, noting the devastating impact of accidents.

“We cannot continue with the status quo when so many lives are lost, and thousands are left living with disabilities due to road crashes. This initiative is essential to reversing these disturbing trends,” Taueatsoala said.
