Polokwane Muni and UniLim to tackle water, electricity issues

City of Polokwane and University of Limpopo partner to tackle water scarcity and energy challenges, pledging collaborative solutions

POLOKWANE – The City of Polokwane and the University of Limpopo have joined forces to tackle pressing issues affecting the university community, including water scarcity and energy supply challenges.

In a recent meeting, the two parties agreed to work together to find lasting solutions to these challenges, prioritising proactive communication and collaborative problem-solving.

The meeting, attended by the Executive Mayor, Councillor Mosema John Mpe, and the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, aimed to address the water crisis and security concerns on and off campus.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala says that key agreements included prioritising the university’s water supply to minimise interruptions and exploring short-term, medium-term, and lonmunig-term solutions.

“Additionally, the parties agreed to enhance security measures, including fixing high-mast street lights in Mankweng by November 15, 2024, and increasing patrols and visible policing in poorly lit areas,” says Selala.

A joint task team will monitor the water situation, recommend interventions, and report daily to the Executive Mayor during upgrades to the two main dams supplying water to the university.
