Laaste Hoop siblings arrested for murder of day-old baby

Preliminary investigations suggest the child was killed after she was born at home and police found the body buried in a shallow grave.

POLOKWANE – A woman (26) and her brother (43) will appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court soon for allegedly stabbing and killing a day-old baby girl.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has expressed shock over the incident and dubbed it a heinous killing.

The siblings allegedly stabbed the baby with a sharp instrument on her upper body and buried the body in a shallow grave.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the siblings were arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Ga Malatji, Laaste Hoop, outside Mankweng.

“Preliminary investigations established that the infants mother and her brother killed the child after she was born at home. The two suspects were linked to the incident and immediately arrested,” his statement read.

The circumstances that led to the incident are still under police investigation.
