POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Traffic Department has issued a plea to motorists to exercise caution while driving in the city, to prevent accidents.

This follows a serious crash on Sunday afternoon involving a sedan, a bakkie, and a pedestrian at the intersection of Thabo Mbeki and Landdros Maré Streets.

According to reports, the bakkie, from the direction of Landdros Maré Street, struck a pedestrian before colliding with a sedan in Thabo Mbeki Street. The impact caused severe injuries to multiple individuals.

A sedan is hit on the side by a speeding bakkie. The driver loses control and sustains injuries.

Traffic spokesperson Kgaugelo Mphago confirmed that the driver of the bakkie sustained a head injury and significant blood loss. He opted not to be transported to hospital. An unconscious passenger, along with the pedestrian and the driver of the sedan, were rushed to hospital. Fortunately, the pedestrian’s injuries were not life-threatening, Mphago said.

In a separate incident last Thursday, a male pedestrian was killed after after being struck by a vehicle near a traffic circle at The Aloes Lifestyle Estate. Speeding was identified as the primary cause of the fatal accident.

Days earlier, on October 25, firefighters responded to a fire caused by a collision involving a truck and a bakkie at the corner of Dorp and Thabo Mbeki streets. The truck crashed into the wall of Pietersburg Laerskool shortly after school hours, igniting an electrical box. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver lost control after attempting to avoid a collision.
