Travel essentials to keep your skin protected when travelling

Maintaining healthy and radiant skin while on the go doesn't have to be complicated, says Dr Ellen Moila.

POLOKWANE – Dr Ellen Moila, a medical doctor, aesthetician, and the founder of Orchid Aesthetics Clinic, shares essential skincare tips to keep your skin hydrated, protected, and glowing while travelling. With the December holiday approaching, many of us are planning vacations, but travel can sometimes take a toll on our skin.

“While travelling, your usual skincare routine can easily get disrupted as you navigate different weather conditions and a busy itinerary. Keeping this in mind, maintaining healthy and radiant skin while on the go doesn’t have to be complicated,” she explains.

Here are some skincare travel essentials and ingredients to keep in your cosmetic bag:

• Cleanser: A gentle and hydrating cleanser is crucial for removing excess oil and impurities without stripping your skin’s natural moisture. If you can’t find a travel-sized version of your trusted cleanser, opt for cleansing wipes for convenience. Clean skin is the foundation of your skincare routine, especially after a long day of travel.

• Moisturiser: Changes in climate and long flights can leave your skin dry and dehydrated. Pack a rich yet lightweight moisturiser that locks in hydration without clogging pores. Choose a formula that suits your skin type—gel-based for oily skin or cream-based for dry skin.

• Sunscreen: Sun protection is essential regardless of your destination. Exposure to UV rays is heightened during air travel, so include a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to shield your skin from harmful rays.

• Hydrating Body Butter: Travel, especially by air, can leave your skin feeling tight and dry due to low cabin humidity. A hydrating body butter locks in moisture, so choose one that is rich but non-greasy for added comfort.

• Lip Balm with SPF: Protect your lips from dryness and sun damage by keeping a moisturising lip balm with SPF on hand to avoid chapped or sunburned lips during your trip.

Moila notes that air travel can be harsh on the skin. For longer flights, consider using hydrating skin pads or facial mists to maintain moisture and refresh your complexion. She also recommends ensuring your skincare products include beneficial ingredients.

These include:

• Hyaluronic acid: Helps your skin retain moisture, keeping it plump and hydrated.

• Vitamin C: Protects your skin from free radical damage and environmental stressors.

• Ceramides: Strengthen your skin’s natural barriers, which can be compromised during climate changes and dry air in flights.

While some skincare products are ideal for travel, others may cause harm due to sensitivity to climate changes.

Moila advises avoiding:

• Retinoids: Can increase skin sensitivity, particularly if you’re spending more time in the sun.

• Strong exfoliators: Can exacerbate dryness and irritation in harsh climates.

• Alcohol-based toners: May strip the skin of natural oils, contributing to dryness.

“For those with sensitive skin, it’s crucial to be cautious about the products you pack. By including these travel-friendly skincare essentials and adapting your routine to your new environment, you can keep your skin happy and glowing no matter where your travels take you,” she concluded.
