Vuwani pensioner (71) loses home in fire

Pensioner Alfred Mabidi's family left with nothing after devastating fire destroys his home and vehicle, community aid sought for rebuilding.

LIMPOPO – In a tragic incident, Alfred Mabidi, a 71-year-old pensioner from Hamabidi in Vuwani, lost his 14-room home, vehicle, and other belongings in a fire that broke out around 01:30 on October 26.

The fire has left Mabidi and his family with nothing but the clothes on their backs, prompting them to appeal to the community for assistance with food, clothing, furniture, household items and building materials to help rebuild their home.

Mabidi recalls being awakened by the sound of smashing glass in his garage. “It sounded like the car was being smashed, so I got out of bed and saw the entire yard lit up, as if it was daylight,” he said. When he went to check, he found the garage engulfed in flames, with thick smoke filling the passage.

“There were five of us in the house, and we scrambled to escape,” Mabidi said. Neighbours quickly arrived but were unable to contain the blaze. “I felt like I was dreaming as I watched helplessly. We lost everything.” Mabidi, deeply grateful that no lives were lost, expressed his thanks to neighbours who provided shelter, food and comfort in the aftermath.

Vhembe SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that a case of arson has been opened, and one suspect was initially detained for questioning but has since been released. Police urge anyone with information to come forward.

Mabidi welcomes assistance from compassionate community members or businesses willing to help. He can be contacted at 065 547 8794.
