Polokwane security guard arrested after warning shots injures 3 people

The guard, acting on an assumption about his colleague, fired warning shots into the ground, inadvertently injuring three bystanders.

POLOKWANE – A 45-year-old security guard has been arrested after firing warning shots that apparently injured three people in the city’s central business district on Saturday afternoon, on the corner of Paul Kruger and Devenish Streets.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba, the guard reported that he observed suspicious movements and feared that his colleague was being kidnapped.

“Acting on this assumption, he fired warning shots into the ground, inadvertently injuring three bystanders.”

Police and emergency services personnel promptly responded to the scene, and the injured individuals were transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

The guard’s firearm was seized, and he has been charged with three counts of attempted murder.

He appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court for profiling and a bail hearing.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
