Heavy rainfall damages Seshego’s cemetery

Sand washed away from untombed areas filled nearby tombs with water, affecting the cemetery's dignity and peaceful environment.

POLOKWANE – Recent rainfall has led to significant damage at the Seshego graveyard, managed by the Polokwane Municipality.

In October, the municipality reported storm-related damage to graves and tombstones and encouraged residents to check on their loved ones’ resting places for any possible impact.

Residents who discover damage to tombstones have been advised to contact the installation companies to restore them to good condition.

Storms have impacted several areas in Limpopo, including Seshego and Mankweng, where homes were destroyed and some families were left in great hardship after losing important belongings.

Some graves at Seshego graveyard sink in due to heavy rainfall.

In Extension 71, corrugated iron roofs on RDP homes were blown off, and similarly affected were local churches with the same roofing material. Municipal ward councillors and committee members promptly began restoration efforts after the storm.

This week, heavy rains again hit these areas, causing further flooding and damage at the gravesite. Sand washed away from untombed areas filled nearby tombs with water, affecting the cemetery’s dignity and peaceful environment.

For further assistance, residents may contact the municipality’s environmental management unit at 015 290 2246. Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala urged residents to remain vigilant during these adverse weather conditions.
