Polokwane teen (19) wins 3-year culinary scholarship

Raven Jardin's culinary dreams take flight with R300 000 grant for Limpopo Chef's Academy, including international training in Mauritius and the US.

POLOKWANE – Raven Jardin (19) didn’t particularly enjoy spending time in the kitchen. But, when an opportunity arose, she seized it wholeheartedly. Her mother, Wendy-Leigh Coombes, calls it a “heaven-sent opportunity”.

Raven recently received a three-year grant to study at the Limpopo Chef’s Academy, where she is training to become an occupational grande chef. Although she started her journey just two months ago, exciting experiences lie ahead. She will spend six months in Mauritius, followed by a stint in the US for hands-on learning.

“She will be able to experience opportunities I never had,” says Wendy-Leigh.

In December, Raven will begin her practical training at Bolivia Lodge, where she needs to log 2 700 hours of kitchen work, performing any task required.

“If I lose my job at the lodge or any future job, I risk losing my grant,” Raven said.

She also appreciates the academy’s strict policies. The total course costs R300 000, and she receives transport money as part of the grant. “So far, I’m loving every minute of it,” she added.

Raven’s kitchen skills were initially honed at home, learning from her mom and through self-practice while helping out during Wendy-Leigh’s long work hours.

“I would guide her on ingredients, and she would experiment,” Wendy-Leigh recalls. “She’s my right hand at home while I juggle three jobs.”

Balancing her responsibilities, Raven is also completing her final subject for her Gr 12 General Education Development (GED) certificate.

Despite the grant, additional expenses loom. She needs specialised kitchen tools, including expensive knives, and is learning maintenance, health, safety, and knife skills.

To cover flights, visas, programme management, and administrative fees, Raven requires R40 000.
