DA retains Ward 39 in Polokwane during by-elections

Out of 1 220 ballots cast, the DA secured 846 votes, while the ANC received 368 votes and reflects a 13% increase in support from the previous election.

POLOKWANE – In Polokwane’s Ward 39 bi-elections, the DA successfully retained their hold on the ward, defeating the ANC in a closely watched contest.

Out of 1 220 ballots cast, the DA secured 846 votes, while the ANC received 368 votes. Four ballots were declared invalid. The DA’s victory reflects a 13% increase in support from the previous election.

The bi-election was triggered by the deployment of former ward councillor Adv Franco Marx to the provincial legislature following the passing of Tiny Chidi. The contest marked the first time both the ANC and DA contested the ward without the involvement of smaller parties in the ward.

At a media briefing preceding the bi-election, ANC’s Reuben Madadzhe welcomed former leaders from the DA and ActionSA, including former DA provincial legislature member Risham Maharaj, who had not retained his seat after the recent elections.

“I want to be part of a team that builds rather than breaks down the province. After deep reflection, I realised that the opposition lacks the numbers to lead this province.

“They fail to recognise the strides made by the ANC in improving Limpopo,” said Maharaj.

In response, DA Limpopo chairperson Jacques Smalle emphasised the party’s ongoing renewal strategy:

“Our plan to accommodate various demographics is clear, as evidenced by the latest bi-election results. This momentum should further manifest in the upcoming local government elections.”

Smalle extended best wishes to Maharaj. “In 2024, Maharaj did not return to the legislature due to the election outcome. It was not his fault. We wish him success in his political and personal endeavours.”
