Labour expert Nthatheni Ramulongo passes away

Labour relations expert Nthatheni Ramulongo has died at 70, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and expertise in the labour sector.

LIMPOPO – Renowned labour relations expert and former manager of the Department of Labour’s Thohoyandou office, Nthatheni Lacton Ramulongo, has passed away at the age of 70.

Ramulongo died on November 17 in a private hospital in Polokwane after a long illness. Born in Hasinthumule village, he later moved to Biaba near Nzhelele and most recently resided in Makumeke village near Malamulele.

Ramulongo began his career in government under paramount chief Patrick Ramaano Mphephu, the former president of the Republic of Venda. Over the years, he held various positions in government departments, including the Department of Labour.

Known for his dedication and intellect, Ramulongo was admired for his understanding of labour relations. His analysis and commentary on labour issues were regularly featured on platforms such as Phalaphala FM and Vhembe FM, where he simplified complex laws for the public.

Family spokesperson and younger brother, Madia Ramulongo, described him as a hardworking, humble man who respected people of all ages. In his early years, he was full of energy and optimism, with a passion for improving the labour space. One of his dreams was to launch a cleaning campaign for Thohoyandou in collaboration with the University of Venda, a project that remained incomplete due to his passing.

After retiring in 2015, Ramulongo established the Ramulongo Labour Consultancy and Procurements Ltd, based at the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA) offices in Thohoyandou. Through his company, he provided invaluable advice on labour laws to both workers and employers.

Madia fondly remembered his brother as “a giant in every sense – physically, intellectually, and spiritually. He noted that no one could match his charisma in social settings, particularly on the dance floor”.

Ramulongo is survived by his wife, Hangwani, children Lufuno, Vhulondo, Edzisani, Vhutshilo, Londolani, Muofhe, Khethani, and Mashaka.

A memorial service was held for him on Friday and his funeral was held on Sunday.
