Limpopo storms leave trail of destruction

Recent storms in Limpopo leave dozens homeless and injured, with 43 households affected and nearly 30 homes destroyed.

LIMPOPO – Recent storms have caused widespread devastation in Limpopo, leaving many residents homeless and injured.

Communities in Mtititi, New Orleans, Jilongo, and surrounding areas in Wards 35 and 36 bore the brunt of the destruction, with dozens of houses damaged or destroyed.

Collins Chabane Mayor Gezane Shadrack Maluleke visited affected families, offering assurance and immediate support. “A preliminary report shows 43 households affected, with nearly 30 homes destroyed. Five people sustained minor to moderate injuries and received treatment at Malamulele Hospital,” he said.

The storm also affected several power lines, exacerbating the challenges for residents. In response, the municipality distributed food parcels, washing powder, and other essentials. Temporary shelter arrangements are being explored to assist displaced families.

“We guarantee that residents will not go hungry while we assess the damage and mobilise resources to rebuild. We are working with district and provincial authorities to ensure a comprehensive recovery plan is in place,” Maluleke added.

The mayor was accompanied by chief whip Erick Baloyi and members of the executive committee. Additionally, the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu, highlighted that Limpopo has been heavily impacted by recent thunderstorms.

“Areas like Mtititi, Jilongo, New Orleans, and Govhu have seen rooftops ripped off 36 houses, leaving families vulnerable. Our disaster management teams have been activated, providing temporary shelters and blankets,” said Makamu. He also confirmed that the National Disaster Management Centre has classified the situation as a state of disaster.
