Eskom gives ‘zero-buyers’ until 13 December to legally connect
Should these electricity users not use this opportunity by December 13, they will be disconnected and fines and other penalties will apply, Eskom said.
POLOKWANE – Power utility Eskom has set a new deadline for ‘zero buyers’ – those who have illegal electricity connections and purchase units from unknown vendors or who have bypassed or tampered with their meters – the opportunity to come forward and convert their prepaid electricity meters to the new Key Revision Number 2 (KRN2) system and become paying customers.

Should these electricity users not use this opportunity by December 13, they will be disconnected and fines and other penalties will apply, Eskom said.
It was announced last week that around 400 000 zero-buyers had already been converted to paying customers, following panic around the November 24 deadline to convert KRN1 meters to the new KRN2 update.
In November, Eskom customers from neighbouring Polokwane townships stood in long queues in request for assistance after not being able to load their prepaid electricity vouchers.
Eskom recently reported that around 2.1m prepaid units belong to ‘zero-buyers’.
National spokesperson for Eskom, Daphne Mokwena said they hope that by the deadline, all the customers may at least have made their meters KRN2 compliant.
After this date, Eskom will continue assisting those who may still be experiencing issues, monitoring the payment of fines, replacing meters, continuing to issue tamper fines, and disconnecting those who did not come forward, Mokwena said.
For assistance, Eskom customers can call 0860 037 566.
