Contactless card payments on N1-N4 route from June 2025

By enabling real-time payment processing, this system minimizes the risk of stolen credit or debit cards being exploited by fraudsters at toll plazas.

POLOKWANE – Starting June 1, 2025, Bakwena will implement a significant upgrade to its payment systems on the N1N4 route, including the N1 in Limpopo.

This transition to contactless card payments is set to enhance the security and convenience of toll transactions, ensuring a seamless travel experience for road users.

The adoption of contactless payment technology is a major step forward in combating toll fraud.

By enabling real-time payment processing, this system minimizes the risk of stolen credit or debit cards being exploited by fraudsters at toll plazas.

Furthermore, contactless transactions eliminate the need for physical handovers of payment cards, ensuring that your card remains securely in your possession throughout the payment process.

Until the transition is fully in place, Bakwena will continue to accept:

  • Credit and fleet card magstripe payments
  • Cash payments
  • SANRAL tag payment methods

However, Bakwena notes that debit cards are not accepted as a payment method.

Benefits of Contactless Payment

  1. Convenience: Contactless payments are faster than traditional payment methods, reducing waiting times at toll plazas and improving traffic flow.
  2. Safety: With no need to hand over your card, the risk of theft or misuse is significantly reduced.
  3. Efficiency: Real-time payment processing ensures accurate and swift transactions, making it easier for travelers to proceed without delays.

Bakwena’s adoption of contactless technology reflects a broader commitment to innovation and enhanced customer service.

Motorists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new system ahead of its launch in June 2025, ensuring a smooth transition to this more secure and efficient payment method.
