While the organisers of the protest march did not specify their reasons, many ratepayers expressed frustration, claiming that money used for the event could have been better spent addressing the city’s pressing water shortages.

The Polokwane Municipality switches on the 2024 festive lights at the Jack Botes park.

The municipality, however, clarified that the event relied on sponsorship and cost under R1m.

Disgruntled locals had called for the event’s funds to be redirected to ensure consistent water supply, especially given the city’s ongoing challenges, despite the recently completed Seshego Water Plant and infrastructure repairs by bulk supplier Lepelle Northern Water.

The 2024 installment of the Polokwane Festive Lights event take off with a traditional music experience.

Amid the festivities, Mayor John Mpe addressed the crowd, reflecting on the milestones of 2024 and sharing hope for the future.

“The year 2024 has been an eventful and remarkable one for Polokwane. Together, we have accomplished milestones that affirm our city’s growth and potential,” he said.

Mpe highlighted the city’s recognition as a ‘City of Cleanliness’, following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s visit earlier this year.
