Transparency and accountability at MPAC public hearing
The hearing focused on a range of key topics, including progress on service delivery, financial performance and addressing backlogs.
POLOKWANE – Last Tuesday, the municipal public accounts committee (MPAC) of Polokwane Municipality convened a public hearing to review the 2024/25 first quarter institutional performance report. This exercise demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to transparency and accountability in service delivery.
The hearing focused on a range of key topics, including progress on service delivery, financial performance and addressing backlogs.
These deliberations were also about crafting actionable solutions to enhance municipal services.
The session was chaired by MPAC chairperson Mapula Phoshoko and emphasised the importance of engaging the public in municipal oversight processes.
Phoshoko emphasised the committee’s oversight role as mandated by law.
“This committee has been assigned to scrutinise institutional performance and ensure that the municipality operates in line with its mandate. It is essential for the public to understand how their municipality accounts for various issues brought before the committee,” she explained.
“This is a platform for accountability,” Phoshoko explained.
“As we investigate institutional performance, we aim to drive improvements and build public confidence. Where there are gaps or backlogs, this process allows us to develop strategies to address them effectively.”
The public hearing also serves as a vital opportunity for citizens to gain insights into how their municipality is working to address their needs and concerns as the municipality remains responsive and transparent in its operations.
Phoshoko reiterated that the outcomes of the hearing would be pivotal in shaping the municipality’s approach to service delivery.
“The feedback we receive during these hearings is invaluable. It helps us not only measure our progress but also refine our strategies to better serve the people of Polokwane,” concluded Phoshoko.
