Seshego’s Det Sgt Nation Teffo is a champion for justice

Det Sgt Nation Teffo, attached to the Seshego Police Station, uses his voice to promote awareness and oppose destructive attitudes and behaviour.

POLOKWANE – The Seshego Police Station is proud to have a true champion of justice, for whom 11 years of several obstacles finally paid off, saving sexual abuse victims from further damage.

Starting off in the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit in 2013, Det Sgt Nation Teffo secured four life sentences for various sex offenders and years of imprisonment in several cases over the years.

In one of his cases, Jeffrey Thabo Ngoepe (40) was charged with two counts of rape in Matlala, and was sentenced to two life terms in 2020. The detective explained that victims were often violated by people close to them, as in Ngoepe’s case as he was a friend to the victim’s family and lived with them while having continuously abused her.

In another case, William Mokgonyana (37) was sentenced to two life terms on two counts of rape. “He demanded food from the victim and cursed her before raping her,” Teffo said.

The 10-year imprisonment sentence of Matsobane Polex Phaleng (26) for the rape of a 17-year-old girl from Matlala, came with similar technicalities, he explained.

Such day-to-day personal experiences, prove Teffo’s devotion to end the sex violence scourge among the vulnerable, and requires a strong desire to effect positive change in society and advocate for those who frequently feel voiceless, he insisted.

“I am definitely an ally in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide and I advocate for the rights of the victims.” He uses his voice to promote awareness and oppose destructive attitudes and behaviour.

Working with forensic social workers to support and collaborate to make communities safer, is among my mandates. It helps to remind me of the need for teamwork in the law enforcement for the benefit of our beloved people,” he explained.

Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe has lauded Teffo and his work.

“Limpopo is blessed to have an investigator who is deeply committed to his work and continuously makes a difference in the community. His string of achievements demonstrate the investigator’s exceptional skills, dedication, and commitment to delivering justice for survivors of sexual violence,” she said.
