Polokwane psychologist’s tips for a brain-boosting school holiday

Clinical psychologist shares expert tips on games and activities to boost brain power and keep minds engaged during the school holiday.

POLOKWANE – Clinical psychologist Sandra Mamabolo provided some tips on the types of activities and games families can play during the school holiday, while at your destination or while travelling in the car.

“Since the school holiday is upon us, children need games to refresh their memories. Games such as puzzles that require logic, mathematics, word and visuospatial skills can improve your processing speed and memory.

“Some other activities you can keep yourself busy with, or games that you can play are crossword puzzles, Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, chess and word jumbles”.
She added that reading is also good exercise for the mind.

“Reading challenges the brain. Learning new skills at any age is a good task for the mind. Meditation can also help calm the body, slow your breathing, and reduce stress and anxiety.

“Activities such as dancing, swimming and yoga are also great exercises. Dancing can engage areas of the brain involved in rhythm and balance, while swimming promotes mental well-being and improvement in verbal and visual-spatial memory.”
