MEC Makamu hands over houses in Mhinga and Matiyani

MEC Basikopo Makamu handed over houses to families in Mhinga and Matiyani, providing shelter and dignity to vulnerable communities.

LIMPOPO – The MEC for CoGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu handed over houses to two deserving families in Mhinga and Matiyani villages, as part of government’s ongoing efforts to provide proper shelter and restore dignity to vulnerable communities.

Among the recipients were Madzivandlela Chauke, a 100-year-old resident of Matiyani, and Portia Misheki, a mother of four from Mhinga Zone 2.

Chauke, who previously lived in two deteriorated and unsafe houses, expressed gratitude upon receiving her new, fully furnished home. “I am very happy that finally I get to live in a house I can be proud of,” she said with tears of joy.

Misheki and her children, who endured cramped and inadequate living conditions, now have a secure and spacious home.

The handover was meant to highlight government’s commitment to empowering women and children, particularly during the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Toward Women and Children.

Speaking at the event, Makamu reaffirmed the department’s dedication to ensuring access to quality housing for all deserving beneficiaries, in line with the Freedom Charter. “As it was said in 1955, ‘There shall be houses, security, and comfort.’ Today, we deliver on that promise,” Makamu stated.

The houses are part of the 2024/25 financial year project, which has so far delivered 70 homes in the area, with one military veteran unit still under construction.

Hosi Shilungwa Mhinga, who joined the ceremony, spoke about the importance of community development, expressing his pride in hosting the event in Mhinga.
