POLOKWANE – Seshego-born Richard ‘Maestro’ Moroaswi has made a name for himself as a talented gospel choir conductor, leading South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) school choirs to national success.

Moroaswi’s passion for choral conducting knows no bounds, and he finds the experience incredibly rewarding.

“I love being a choir conductor because it allows me to perform in various settings and events,” Moroaswi told Polokwane Observer.

“What’s more, choirs are relatively easy and inexpensive to develop, as they don’t require specialized equipment or instruments.”

Moroaswi’s extensive experience in the music industry has taken him to various competitions, performances, and events across Limpopo and beyond.

The first Gospel choir conductor from Seshego Richard ‘Maestro’ Moroaswi conducts one of his choirs in Polokwane.

During the festive season, he conducts choirs that sing Christmas carols and performs in churches. Moroaswi also offers vocal coaching to church choirs, individual singers, and community groups.

A seasoned adjudicator, Moroaswi has judged competitions for the South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) and the Mapungubwe Arts, Culture and Heritage district.

He has also mentored numerous young conductors, sharing his expertise and passion for music.

For Moroaswi, his choir group is more than just a team – they’re family.

To foster a sense of unity and appreciation, he initiated a heartwarming tradition called “good notes.” During practice sessions, choir members draw names and write compliments for one another, which are then shared in envelopes the following week.

Moroaswi is also involved with the South African Arts and Culture Youth Forum (SAACYF) and the School Identity Project, conducting the National and African Anthems.
