Child safety for this holiday period

As the festive season approaches, prioritise your child's safety by teaching them about stranger danger and encourage open communication.

POLOKWANE – The festive season is nearly here, making it essential for parents and guardians to ensure their children’s safety. With frequent incidents of human trafficking, abuse, and children going missing, it’s important to always be aware of your children’s whereabouts.

One of Seshego’s community leaders, Richard Legodi, emphasised the importance of children knowing their full names, their parents’ names, their home addresses, and a couple of phone numbers for family members.

He also advised that children should be taught to avoid speaking to strangers, as this could put them in danger, and they should refrain from getting into strangers’ cars.

Many parents are not accustomed to spending extended periods with their young ones, as children usually go to school early and return home in the afternoon.

Additionally, some parents have work commitments that keep them away for significant amounts of time.

It is also vital for parents to participate in the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children to gain comprehensive information on child safety.

“Parents should encourage their children to open up about their feelings and experiences. This way, they can address any problems early on and potentially prevent dangerous situations,” he concluded.

This festive season, it is particularly important to help children avoid busy places to reduce the risk of danger.
