POLOKWANE – After an enjoyable new year celebration, a babalaas or hangover could be inevitable for drinkers.
From a medical perspective, alcohol can have short and long term effects on the body.
Mankweng practitioner, Dr William Moore said the short term effects can include euphoria, mood changes, and lowered inhibitions.
However, a babelaas can also lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and changes in hearing, vision, and perception.
Long term, a hangover causes insomnia, a weakened immune system, and changes in libido and sexual function.
Hangovers can include fatigue, weakness, thirst, muscle aches, nausea, stomach pain, vertigo, sensitivity to light, sound, and anxiety. It can also impair attention, decision making
“Heavy drinkers also suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, stroke, and alcohol use disorder. Alcohol can also increase the risk of diabetes, weight gain, and cancers such as stomach cancer, bowel cancer, breast cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer, esophageal cancer, and liver cancer,” Moore explained.
Concoctions are not medically recommended but, the following food can help cure hangover discomfort:
Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
Toast, like bagels and bread
Crackers
