Mashabela Galane: From herding cows, to comedy and big brands
Renowned for his witty humor, Mashabela ‘Papago’ Galane captivates audiences, leaving them in stitches and temporarily free of their worries.
POLOKWANE – When you mention Mashabela in South African entertainment, comedy springs to mind.
This comedian, actor, and entrepreneur from Polokwane has carved a niche for himself in the comedy world.
Renowned for his witty humor, Mashabela ‘Papago’ Galane captivates audiences, leaving them in stitches and temporarily free of their worries.
Representing Limpopo, he’s a significant contributor to South Africa’s presence on the continental and global entertainment stages.
“As an entrepreneur, I want people to laugh and enjoy a healthy drink through my Moringa gin distillery brand,” he said.
Mashabela is celebrated as one of the pioneers of vernacular comedy in South Africa.
Born in Moletjie village, he told the Polokwane Observer about his tough upbringing in a rural area with limited infrastructure. I grew up herding cows.
That experience shaped some of my principles and techniques as a comedian. It also taught me to appreciate life’s finer things and value my roots,” he said.
After proving his comedic talent, Mashabela also succeeded as a businessman. He attended public schools in his village and was once head boy. “I thought I was among the brightest students,” he recalled. After matric, he pursued dramatic arts and media at Wits University.
Mashabela noted the challenges of competing with peers who had access to better resources growing up. “I was determined to succeed. Mediocrity wasn’t an option,” he said.
Though he discovered comedy at university, Mashabela had long admired Ben Maraka, a Thobela FM on-air personality. “Switching to my native language helped me reach a wider audience. My comedy reflects the daily lives of average South Africans,” he said.
Known for marriage jokes, Mashabela humorously connects with both single and married audiences. Recently, he launched a sneaker brand, Letreecha. “Your choices shape your path. Dream big, start, and make good decisions,” he said.
