Polokwane landscaper shares secrets to a thriving lawn

Chris Manamela, who has completed landscaping short courses, emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance when selecting garden products or equipment.

POLOKWANE – As a private landscaper from Flora Park, Chris Manamela has noticed that many people struggle to keep their lawns looking healthy and green. According to Manamela, the key to a thriving lawn lies in the soil.

“To achieve a lush, green lawn, it’s essential to test your soil,” Manamela advises. “The roots of your grass rely on healthy, nutritious soil to grow. Fertilizing your lawn with the right products can also make a significant difference.”

Manamela, who has completed landscaping short courses, emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance when selecting garden products or equipment.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help when buying fertilizers or other lawn care products,” he says. “Fertilizers can be beneficial in killing weeds and unwanted insects that damage your lawn.”

When choosing a fertilizer, Manamela recommends considering factors such as soil test results, plant needs, and environmental health.

“Buy what you can afford, and don’t hesitate to ask for advice if you’re unsure about which fertilizer to choose,” he advises.

Manamela also shares an interesting fact about grass: “Like many plants, grass produces a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs blue and red light, reflecting green light back to our eyes. This process also helps plants and grasses turn solar energy into food through photosynthesis.”

To test the soil in your lawn, Manamela suggests the following steps:

– Use a clean, rust-free trowel to dig a v-shaped hole 15-20cm deep into the soil.
– Take a slice of soil from one side of the hole, removing the top, bottom, and sides, and leaving 2.5-5cm from the middle.
– Repeat this process in multiple areas of your lawn and mix the samples together.
