Overcoming challenges after matric final exams

Matric exams are a pivotal milestone; with support and perseverance, learners can overcome setbacks and achieve their goals.

POLOKWANE – The matric final exams are a pivotal milestone for South African learners, marking the completion of high school and granting them the National Senior Certificate (NSC). This qualification is essential for opening doors to further education and career opportunities.

The 2024 matric exams began on October 21 and concluded on November 28, spanning six weeks to give learners sufficient time to prepare. This period is a defining moment for many students, determining their next steps in life. However, the outcome of these exams can be daunting, as not everyone will succeed on their first attempt.

“Failing is not the end of it all, but remaining in a failing situation is the biggest problem that a learner can be in,” said PEPPS counselling coordinator, Minky Masote. Masote emphasised that learners who do not pass have options, such as upgrading, rewriting, or repeating matric, giving them a chance to improve their results and pursue their goals.

Masote also highlighted the emotional toll failure can take on learners. “Failing or not doing well can cause anxiety for learners and make them feel like they are not good enough or they did not work hard enough. This can also make them feel like they have disappointed themselves, their parents and their teachers as well. Parents’ support is very important during this time, they should encourage their children to try again if they did not do well, failed or meet the necessary requirements,” she said.

Masote urged matriculants to stay focused on their dreams and never lose hope. “Start over if you have to, but never give up. Hard work pays off, and in the end, it will always be worth it.”

Her message serves as a reminder to matriculants and their families that setbacks are not permanent, and with perseverance and support, success is within reach.
