Polokwane water crisis continues amid operational challenges

Polokwane Municipality faces water crisis as reservoir levels drop to critically low levels due to operational challenges at Ebenezer Plant.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality has issued a warning to residents and businesses regarding critically low reservoir levels.

This after operational challenges at the Ebenezer Plant, managed by Lepelle Northern Water.

A recent pipe burst and subsequent power outage have significantly affected the water supply to various areas within the municipality.

The plant was initially shut down yesterday (January 7) to repair the pipe burst. However, a second shutdown occurred early this morning (January 8) due to a power outage caused by a fallen tree.

Electricians from the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality are currently working to resolve this issue.

Additionally, the municipality is facing challenges with the Sandriver boreholes, which the Polokwane municipal team is addressing.

Reservoir levels are critically low, and some areas are experiencing total water supply interruptions.

Municipality spokesperson, Thipa Selala, says the current reservoir levels are “0% for Potgieter, 50ml Krugersburg, 30ml Dome, 30ml Flat and River North.”

The municipality urges community members to use water sparingly during this period.

Residents may report any water-related issues to the Water and Sanitation Helpline at 015 290 2376 or via WhatsApp at 068 290 8736.
