Limpopo insurance fraud murder trio back in court

The hearing is intended to finalise the state's investigations and address the recent postponement of her bail application.

POLOKWANE – The daughter and co-accused of insurance fraud suspect Rachel Kutumela is scheduled to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on February 7.

The hearing is intended to finalise the state’s investigations and address the recent postponement of her bail application.

Flora Shokane’s lawyer, Moses Manthata, explained that the December 18 bail hearing was delayed due to insufficient court staff during the festive season.

Additionally, it was agreed in court to consolidate her bail application with those of her mother, Kutumela, and her aunt, Anna Shokane.

The three women, residents of Moletjie Ga-Maleka, face multiple charges, including nine counts of murder, fraud, money laundering, receiving proceeds from unlawful activities and defeating the ends of justice.

According to Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, spokesperson for the Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Kutumela and her sister fraudulently took out life, accident, and funeral insurance policies for several individuals and later cashed in on these policies following the insured persons’ deaths. The payouts were made through various service providers.

The NPA has provisionally set February 12-14 as the dates for the consolidated bail application involving all three accused.

Manthata noted that during their recent engagement, the state showed little progress in its investigations and requested additional time, hinting at the possibility of further arrests.

In November, after three days of intense bail hearings during which Kutumela took the stand, all three women abandoned their bail applications midway through the proceedings.

Malabi-Dzhangi stated that the crimes spanned from 2000 to 2024, during which time the insured individuals died under various circumstances. Kutumela faces six counts of premeditated murder, while her sister and daughter each face three counts of murder. Kutumela has indicated she does not intend to plead guilty should the case proceed to trial.
