Chuene Clinic to remain closed indefinitely

Chuene Clinic closure extended indefinitely for staff safety with patients directed to nearby facilities for healthcare services.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Health has announced that the Chuene Clinic, originally slated to reopen after a four-day closure, will remain shut indefinitely.

This decision comes in light of a reassessment following a series of traumatic incidents at the facility.

The closure follows multiple violent events, including break-ins, robbery, abduction, and sexual assault targeting nursing staff.

Department spokesperson Neil Shikwambana says that after evaluating the emotional and psychological toll on affected personnel, the department determined that prioritising the safety and mental well-being of its workers outweighs the urgency of resuming clinic operations.

“We acknowledge and deeply regret the trauma that the healthcare workers at Chuene Clinic have experienced,” says Shikwambana.

“The safety, well-being, and mental health of our healthcare professionals are of utmost importance, and their concerns must be addressed before any resumption of services can take place.”

To this end, the department aims to enhance security measures at healthcare facilities across the province.

Collaboration with law enforcement agencies and community leaders is underway to implement robust protections that will ensure a safe working environment for healthcare professionals.

In the interim, residents are advised to seek medical assistance at alternative facilities, including Maja, Soetfontein, and Block B clinics, until a resolution is reached.

Further updates on the Chuene Clinic situation will be provided as progress is made.
