Education MEC assesses storm-hit Vhembe schools

Education MEC visited storm-damaged schools in Vhembe East, ensuring readiness for 2025 with mobile classrooms and repair plans.

LIMPOPO – Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya and Collins Chabane Mayor Gezane Shadrack Maluleke recently visited three storm-damaged schools in Vhembe East to assess infrastructure and readiness for the 2025 academic year, which starts in all earnest today (Wednesday).

The schools visited included Gidjana Senior Secondary School, Hoji Senior Primary School and Shingwedzi High School.

Storms late last year left a trail of destruction, damaging over 130 schools across the province, with repairs estimated at over R550m.

At Gidjana Senior Secondary School, which has 393 learners and is one of the district’s top-performing schools, damage included broken windows, uprooted trees, and destroyed roofs. The school’s storeroom was destroyed. Eight mobile classrooms have been provided as a temporary solution, with deliveries already underway.

Hoji Senior Primary School, which has 185 learners from grades five to seven, has seen some repairs initiated by its school governing body. Shingwedzi High School, which also suffered storm damage, has resumed the 2025 academic year.

The MEC took the opportunity to motivate the 230 Gr 12 learners, urging them to excel.

She furthermore instructed principals to refrain from using unsafe classrooms and urged her team to expedite repairs. “Relief in the form of mobile classrooms will be provided for immediate use. Accountability is essential to ensure the 2025 academic year proceeds without disruptions.”

Maluleke expressed gratitude for the MEC’s response, highlighting the municipality’s challenges in addressing multiple disasters.

“The temporary shelters and mobile classrooms will ensure our learners study in safe conditions while permanent solutions are implemented,” he said.

The MEC stressed her commitment to ensuring all learners have a conducive learning environment, particularly in the 36 severely damaged schools. “Our team is ready to support these schools and ensure they can reopen without delays.”
