Search continues for toddler swept away in Nzhelele River
The Musekwa community and police continue searching for two-year-old Desire Munzhedzi, swept away by the Nzhelele River on January 6.

LIMPOPO – The Musekwa community and police divers remain committed to the search for two-year-old Desire Munzhedzi, who was swept away by the overflowing Nzhelele River on January 6.
The tragedy occurred while he was playing near the river with his siblings.
The Munzhedzi family has been left in a state of despair. Prince Munzhedzi, the boy’s uncle, shared their anguish. “We have been camping by the river, hoping to find his body. This is the most painful time our family has ever endured. We pray every day that he is found so we can give him a dignified burial,” he said.
Despite the dangers posed by the crocodile- and hippopotamus-infested rivers, the Musekwa community has rallied to support the Munzhedzi family. The community also contributed money and joined the search efforts, though heavy rains and flooding have hampered progress.
Vhembe police spokesperson, Vuledzani Dathi, reassured the public that the search has not been abandoned. “Our search and rescue K9 unit has been deployed since the incident was reported. The search continues despite the dangers, as we understand the family’s need for closure.”
Dathi also issued a plea to parents and children: “We urge children to avoid playing along riverbanks or swimming without adult supervision to prevent tragedies like this in the future.”
