Limpopo taxi driver’s false hijack claim backfires with police
The driver admitted to fabricating the story and said he misused cash meant for his employer and hid the vehicle in nearby bushes, locking the keys inside.
LIMPOPO – A 27-year-old taxi driver is in hot water with the Musina Police after admitting he made a false case of hijacking.
The man is said to have opened a car-jacking case on Wednesday (January 15) and alleged he was hijacked while collecting children from school.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng says the man claimed he was robbed of R3 000 and that the suspects drove off with his vehicle to an unknown destination.
“The station commander and his team checked the statement and deemed it suspicious,” Thakeng said.
Upon further questioning, the driver admitted to fabricating the story and confessed to misusing the cash meant for his employer and hiding the vehicle in nearby bushes, locking the keys inside.
The man was arrested on charges of perjury and he is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court soon.
The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the misuse of police resources that could have been used for good.
“This will send a clear cut message that the police will deal harshly with those who think that they can give false information to deceive the police in order to cover their mischievous conduct. Those involved will face the full might of the law. We want to set an example with this taxi driver,” she said.
