Rains cause havoc on Polokwane’s roads and infrastructure

Polokwane's roads, homes, and wetlands suffered significant damage as heavy rains continue to batter the area.

POLOKWANE – Inclement weather across Polokwane and surrounds have caused significant damage to property and road infrastructure.

Over the past two weeks, the Capricorn District Municipality has issued multiple warnings, including a level five alert for disruptive rainfall.

Inclement weather across Polokwane and surrounds cause significant damage to gravel road.

At Parliamentary Village in Bendor, a 3×2.4m wall that once barricaded a wetland collapsed last week, causing a foul-smelling spillage.

Years ago, the area had been a problematic dam requiring technical repairs.

The wall previously protected 33 houses in phase one of the village, from the wetland before it spilled over into the area.

This week, Emmanuel Mongwe of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure said technicians are waiting for the damp ground to dry before initiating temporary repairs.

“Construction of 15 new houses is already underway in phase two, including a new protective wall. Once the weather clears and the area dries, workers will address the damage effectively,” Mongwe stated.

On Monday, heavy rains caused water to gush through an incomplete bridge along Vermikuliet Street, connecting Nelson Mandela Road near the Ladine industrial area.

Despite mild flooding, vehicles and pedestrians managed to navigate the area, thanks to a functioning stormwater system.

Workers commuting from the extension areas, however, faced severe challenges. Many had to cross wetlands and endure poor conditions.

In parts of Bendor, residents reported that consistent rain and lightning strikes have damaged streetlights.

Trees struck by lightning caused further disruptions, leaving some areas without functioning lights.

As of Saturday, assistance from the Polokwane Municipality was still pending.

Pedestrians struggle on gravel roads due to floods, following heavy rainfall in the past weeks.

Flooding along major routes like the R71 remains a critical concern during periods of high rainfall.

This road, vital for travel between Turfloop and Dalmada, has become increasingly dangerous, leading to accidents.

The Polokwane Municipality has urged caution when using roads such as the R71, R81, D19, R521, Landdros Maré and Veldspaat streets.

In response to the excessive flooding, the municipality advised motorists to:

– Drive slowly.

-Avoid driving on road shoulders.

– Maintain safe following distances.

– Switch on headlights.

-Obey traffic instructions.
