Polokwane dietician give tips for parents with picky eaters
Dietician Mariam Maraka shares tips for managing picky eaters, emphasising patience, creating pleasant mealtimes, and offering variety.
POLOKWANE – When dealing with picky eaters, patience is key, advises dietician Mariam Maraka.
Speaking to Review, she said parents should avoid forcing their children to eat, and ensure mealtimes don’t occur when children are overly tired or hungry.
“Make mealtimes pleasant and enjoyable and not just about eating,” Maraka suggests. “Sit down together and chat about their day, such as what they did at school. Offer a variety of age-appropriate foods to keep things interesting.”
She also stresses the importance of respecting a child’s unique eating habits. “Don’t use food as a reward or punishment, as this can create long-term challenges. Instead, set a positive example by maintaining healthy eating habits yourself.”
Maraka encourages creativity in the kitchen. “Involve your child in meal preparation so they see how their food is made. Sometimes, changing the presentation can make a difference. For example, a child might refuse cooked carrots but enjoy raw, grated ones.”
Ultimately, she reminds parents, “You know your child best. Explore what works for both of you, and trust your instincts as a Mom or Dad.”
