Limpopo residents help police capture escaped prisoner

A case of attempted murder had to be registered against the residents after the escapee was severely assaulted after his capture.

LIMPOPO – The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe applauded Ha Mphego village residents for assisting the police in tracing an escaped prisoner.

The escapee, Fhimani Azwinndini (28) was admitted to the Tshilidzini hospital when he allegedly escaped from lawful custody through a window on January 14.

Azwinndini faces charges of kidnapping and murder as well as a case of escaping from lawful custody that was registered and a manhunt launched.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng says the investigating team received notice from Ha Mphego residents that Azwinndini was found and that they had severely assaulted him.

“A case of attempted murder had to be registered as Azwinndini could not speak as a result of the serious injuries he sustained and was admitted to hospital again under police guard,” Thakeng said

He added that Azwinndini will appear in a local magistrate court soon.

Hadebe cautioned communities against taking the law into their hands since it is punishable by law.
