POLOKWANE – Dr Nelson Matsobane Latakgomo, a Limpopo-born general surgeon with a passion for advancing rural healthcare, has achieved a significant milestone in his career by being admitted to the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
He is one of only 42 South African doctors to receive this internationally recognised commendation.
Latakgomo, who specialises in minimally invasive and colorectal surgery, practices at Netcare Pholoso Hospital and accepted the prestigious fellowship during the ACS convocation held virtually in October 2021.
Driven by a commitment to providing high-quality care in rural communities, Latakgomo expressed pride in joining an esteemed group of healthcare professionals dedicated to global health improvements.
“As a local, I am acutely aware of the need for world-class medical care in our province. The ACS strongly promotes improved health in rural areas worldwide, a cause that resonates deeply with me,” he said.
As the head of the trauma programme at Netcare Pholoso, Latakgomo has played a pivotal role in elevating healthcare standards in Limpopo.
In 2020, the hospital earned accreditation as a Level II trauma centre, ensuring the availability of internationally benchmarked trauma and emergency medical services.
Reflecting on his journey, Latakgomo highlighted the importance of self-belief, particularly for those from rural backgrounds. “I’m deeply honoured to receive this fellowship.
I hope it inspires young people in our rural communities to realise that with determination, they can achieve their dreams.”
Johan Smal, North East regional director of Netcare, commended Latakgomo’s achievement.
“This recognition is well-deserved and highlights his unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare. We are privileged to have him as part of our team, contributing significantly to the outstanding care we provide to our communities.”
