Limpopo Radzuma brothers’ murder trial resumes

The trial of Limpopo’s Radzuma brothers resumes with murder charges, including the 2019 killings of two Samwu officials.

LIMPOPO – The trial of the three Radzuma brothers – Simon, Percy, and Ndivhuwo – resumed in the Limpopo High Court sitting at Waterval Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The siblings face over 40 charges, including the 2019 murders of two Samwu officials from the Vhembe District Municipality.

Simon and Ndivhuwo Radzuma were denied bail in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on December 13, due to the seriousness of the charges against them.

State prosecutor Mashudu Nekhumbe highlighted that Simon Radzuma alone faces six counts of murder and multiple robbery charges involving the use of firearms. Nekhumbe said the state has a strong case, with over 70 witnesses having already testified and no delays in the trial.

The court ruled that the accused failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances for bail. Investigations showed that Simon and Ndivhuwo fled their homes, evading arrest for months, and were eventually apprehended in Tzaneen, where each was renting a separate room.

During their arrests, both were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, apparently used in a robbery in Giyani while they were at large.

The court also noted inconsistencies in the affidavits submitted by the accused, particularly regarding their financial circumstances and family responsibilities.

Rabelani Mphaphuli, a spokesperson for the Musetsho and Mani families, expressed gratitude for the court’s decision to deny bail.

“Bail denial shows that the court takes the charges seriously. This decision gives us hope that justice will be served. We hope the trial will proceed swiftly to bring closure to the families. Justice must prevail,” said Mphaphuli.

He also thanked community members and Samwu leaders for their continued support throughout the process.
