Double murder shocks Nzhelele community

The Manyii community is reeling after a mother and her son were found dead in their home, with domestic violence suspected as the motive.

LIMPOPO – The community of Manyii in the Nzhelele area remains in shock following the deaths of Hulisani Nthatyami (37) and her son, Rolivhuwa Mudau (11), whose bodies were discovered on January 14.

Both victims were found with severe injuries inside their home, and police have confirmed a case of double murder.

Vhembe police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Vuledzani Dathi stated that domestic violence is suspected as the motive, although the exact circumstances remain unclear. “A case of double murder had been opened, and we then searched for the deceased’s spouse, Patric Mudau, for questioning,” said Dathi.

It was later revealed that the suspect, believed to be the husband and father, had taken his own life shortly after the murders.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed concern over the prevalence of gender-based violence and femicide. “These ongoing incidents, especially within relationships, are deeply troubling. We urge couples to seek professional help to resolve conflicts before they escalate to such tragedies,” said Hadebe.

The victims’ family is struggling to come to terms with the loss. Family spokesperson Mpho Rambebu described the tragedy as unimaginable. “As sisters, we were inseparable. Losing her and her son is like losing a part of myself. We knew there were differences between them, but we never thought it would end like this,” she said.

Community organisations such as the Real Man Foundation, have also voiced their shock and sorrow. The founder, Itani Nengudza reiterated how important it is to address domestic issues constructively. “We continue to raise awareness about these issues, but it seems there’s no end in sight. Men must learn to handle conflicts in a sober and responsible way,” he urged.

The funeral for Nthatyami and her son was held in Manyii on Saturday.
