Limpopo ANC councillor laid to rest after sudden death

Limpopo ANC councillor Kanukani Maphubu, who passed away after a short illness, was laid to rest with heartfelt tributes to his community service.

LIMPOPO – ANC councillor in the Makhado Municipality, Kanukani Maphubu (41) was laid to rest at the Matshavhawe Cemetery on Sunday. He passed away in hospital after a short illness earlier this month.

Maphubu, who was a councillor for Ward 9, was also a member of the Makhado Municipal Council’s executive committee and portfolio head for sport, arts and culture, the Pastors Forum, and Disaster Management.

Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya, who was the guest speaker during the funeral, paid tribute to the late councillor, saying his death had come as a shock to everyone. “He left us at a time when we needed his insights most. We begin to remember not just that he died, but that his life gave us memories too beautiful to forget. The developments that we see here today were championed by heroes like Maphubu.”

She said that Maphubu’s death was a loss for the family but also to the government and community. “Government appreciates the sacrifice made by Maphubu’s family, which allowed him to spend his time serving the community.”

Speaking on behalf of the family, Takalani Maphubu described her husband as a good man and a loving person. “He laughed and joked with everyone and had no grudges against anybody. We will miss him dearly. He is truly irreplaceable, but God has done his will and we only have to accept it.”

Makhado Mayor Dorcus Mboyi also expressed dismay at Maphubu’s passing. “We did not expect this, and his passing will have a huge impact on service delivery. Maphubu was a reliable servant of the people who would put the interests of the community first. We do not have words to express our loss and we give our sincere condolences to the family, fellow councillors, the community of ward 9 and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. May his soul rest in peace.”
