Limpopo judge reprimands lawyer in Radzuma brothers’ murder trial

High court Limpopo Judge Tshidada scolds lawyer for delays in the Radzuma brothers' Samwu murder trial, urging respect for court rules.

LIMPOPO – During proceedings at the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou last week, Judge Thogomelani Tshidada reprimanded Adv Ntsako Hlongwane for his repeated tardiness and lack of adherence to court protocols. Hlongwane, the legal representative for Percy Radzuma, one of three brothers accused of serious crimes, faced sharp criticism from the judge for delaying the trial.

“You will kiss this profession goodbye if you don’t respect your professional responsibilities and court rules,” said Tshidada. He warned Hlongwane to prioritise his commitments, emphasising that the trial, already prolonged, could no longer face unnecessary delays. The judge expressed frustration over Hlongwane’s absence and late arrival in court, as well as his indication of a planned holiday during the next court sitting on February 17.

The case involves the Radzuma brothers, who are facing 34 charges, including murder, attempted murder, and car hijacking. The charges stem from the 2019 killings of two Samwu members, Ronald Mani and former acting national president Timpson Musetsho. Both men were vocal critics of the Vhembe District Municipality’s controversial R300m investment into the now-defunct VBS Mutual Bank.

During the trial, Dr Thato Magoshoa, a doctor from Tshilidzini Hospital, testified about his treatment of Musetsho in January 2019. Musetsho had sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was later transferred to a Polokwane hospital for further care, the court heard.

The families of the victims expressed disappointment over the repeated delays. “The ongoing postponements have deeply saddened us,” said family spokesperson Rabelani Mphaphuli. He said they did, however, find some solace in Judge Tshidada’s handling of the proceedings. “We hope the trial will proceed as planned on February 17 without further interruptions.”

The three Radzuma brothers remain in custody.
