Marula Festival officially launched in Giyani
Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba launched the Marula Festival, celebrating the cultural and economic impact of the marula tree with top artist performances.
LIMPOPO – The Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, along with Mopani Mayor Pule Shai, Greater Giyani Mayor Thandi Zitha, and Phalaborwa Mayor Meriam Malatji launched this year’s Marula Festival at Masingita Mall in Giyani on Thursday.
The premier made note of the historical significance of the marula tree, describing it as a cornerstone of community life. She noted that the tree provided shade for village gatherings, where decisions were made and disputes settled.
“The marula tree stood as a silent witness to the birth of traditions that bind us to this day,” said Ramathuba.
She further reflected on the role the marula tree plays in community celebrations, particularly with its fruit, which is turned into a rich brew that unites people. “This same tree gifted its fruit, a golden treasure, transformed into a brew that brought people together in celebration.”
Since 2006, the Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (Ledet) has fostered the growth of the mukumbi industry, turning the abundance of marula trees in the Mopani district into economic opportunities.
The Marula Festival has evolved into a cultural and economic hub, attracting domestic and international tourists.
It highlights the marula fruit and its byproducts, from beer brewing to crafts, and supports community-driven economic development.
Mukumbi Industries has been the official supplier of the home-brewed marula beer, with local cooperatives positively impacting the economy by creating jobs and supporting the harvest.
Phalaborwa, with its rich marula tree concentration and proximity to the Kruger National Park, is now the permanent home of the Marula Festival, positioning it as a major international attraction.
The 2025 festival will return to Phalaborwa in March, coinciding with the peak harvest season.
The festival will offer activities across Limpopo, promoting the province’s tourism and local industries.
Artists like Zonke, Benjamin Dube, and King Monada will perform, making this year’s event a must-attend.
