Polokwane park misused as weekend party hotspot
Polokwane park, intended for local recreation, has become a weekend party spot, raising concerns over safety, litter, and the misuse of public space.
POLOKWANE – What was once envisioned as a recreational haven for local residents and their families, has instead become a weekend party hotspot, raising concerns about safety, cleanliness, and the space’s intended use.
Located opposite Technical High School Tom Naudé, the recreational park has faced years of neglect, but plans for its revitalisation are now gaining traction.
In 2018, the municipality proposed erecting a palisade fence to regulate access and protect the park.
Seven years later, municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala confirmed that a clear-view fence is currently being installed.
“This upgrade will introduce proper access control measures, enforce municipal by-laws, and ensure a safer, cleaner environment,” he stated. Dedicated security personnel will also be on duty to address issues such as public drinking, which have marred the park’s reputation.
The park has become a popular spot for weekend gatherings, often leaving it littered with broken glass, plastic bags, and food containers.
Parkrun participants, who use the park for their weekly 5km runs, have expressed concerns over safety due to the debris.
Selala commended their efforts in maintaining the park’s cleanliness and promised additional measures to address these issues.
Despite the Liquor Act of 1989, which prohibits being drunk in or near a park, public drinking remains a challenge in the area.
A notice board detailing rules and regulations is expected to assist law enforcement in maintaining order.
Infrastructure improvements are also underway, including the long-awaited construction of restrooms.
Initially planned in 2019, construction began in 2024, with an expected completion date of April 26 last year, however, delays have pushed the project to its practical completion stage, with a few remaining items on the snag list.
Selala assured residents that the process should be finalised within the next 30 days.
