POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Transport has confirmed to the Polokwane Review-Observer that the N1 is partially open following this morning’s fatal collision near Pienaarsrivier.

Four people were killed and nine people injured after a bus and fuel tanker collided.

Transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said the bus reportedly ran out of fuel and was parked on the side of the road between the yellow line and the barrier, with a trailer attached.

“Some passengers were allegedly relieving themselves next to the barrier when the fuel tanker truck struck the bus from behind, leading to the tragic loss of life. The fuel tanker caught fire after the collision and the flames spread to the bus, causing further damage,” she said.

Chuene said the department will work with relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted, and those responsible for the incident are held accountable.

“As a department, we are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. We wish the injured a speedy and full recovery. We appeal to motorists to exercise extreme caution and patience on our roads, especially during peak travel periods.”
